Smithsonian Magazine 2013

Every month the magazine curates a collection of news and opinions based on a single theme. This issue’s theme was “Borders”. I was commissioned to illustrate an interesting article on how an anthropologist at UCLA uses mathematical equations to draw theoretical borders between street gang turfs in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles’ East Side. The Lotka-Volterra equations- first used to study rival groups of species (from honeybees to hyenas) are now being used to predict where violence between street gangs are most likely to take place. The full article can be found here.
